Bio
Colonel James “Jamie” E. Hayes III joined the National War College faculty in 2019 from the Joint Staff where he served as Chief of Staff in the Deputy Directorate for Special Operations (DDSO). A 1992 West Point graduate, Colonel Hayes was originally commissioned as an Infantry officer. After service as a Rifle Platoon Leader, Mortar Platoon Leader, and Company Executive Officer in the 82d Airborne Division, he successfully completed Special Forces selection and training. Colonel Hayes has commanded special operations units at every level as a Special Forces officer. His combat service includes deployments as a Special Forces Support Company Commander during Operation Enduring Freedom-Philippines; Special Forces Advanced Operational Base (AOB) Commander during Operation Iraqi Freedom; Security Force Advisor Team Commander in Kandahar, Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom; and Special Operations Command-Forward Yemen Commander. Colonel Hayes has also served as Military Assistant to the Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence and as a Special Forces Assignment Officer in the U.S. Army Human Resources Command. He holds a Masters in Military Arts and Sciences from the School of Advanced Military Studies (SAMS) and a Masters in Strategic Studies from the Marine Corps War College.
