Mission

America’s military requires and deserves an industrial base that provides continuous innovation in areas of personnel support, equipment, training, cyberspace, and security technologies and services.  Although, large companies play a significant role, the defense small businesses provide significant innovation – producing thirteen times more patents per employee per year than large businesses. In today’s challenging times, small defense businesses risk significantly reducing staff, curtailing research and expansion, or closing their doors due to the tight capital market.

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Recovery Act) provides an unprecedented effort to jumpstart our economy. President Obama has articulated that small businesses will be one of the key drivers to our nation’s economic recovery and as such, committed key provisions to assist. The Recovery Act program provides access to capital which is intended to stimulate the economy enabling small businesses to continue contributing to our communities, our economy and the future of our country.

Over 70 percent of NDIA's member companies categorized themselves as small businesses. These companies, located across the United States, are responsible for supplying the military services with all sorts of products and services, ranging from air defense systems to unmanned aerial vehicles, and from precision munitions to systems engineering.
The Small Business Division focuses specifically on issues impacting this important industry segment. The division consists of corporate representatives interested in enhancing small business participation in the federal market place.
The division has identified several areas of focus for its activities. The focus areas for each include:

• The Recovery Act
The division provides specific programs to educate small businesses on how to take advantage of programs available as they evolve.

• Teaming and Subcontracting

• Legislation

• Meetings and Conferences
The division develops and organize roundtable discussions with senior government and private sector officials to address current issues. The division will continue to support the NDIA Annual National Small Business Conference.

• Financing
