Mission
The Science & Engineering Technology Division was formed to examine all aspects of science and technology affecting national defense. The division provides a venue for discussion of the nation’s defense needs by examining existing capabilities and suggesting ways to overcome deficiencies in defense research and development (R&D). Individuals from industry, government and academia have the opportunity to examine vital information in an open forum on technical needs and planned efforts. The division is dedicated to raising interest in meeting Department of Defense technology requirements through creative research and advanced development across industry, government and academia.
Objective
Specific objectives of the division include:
- Promoting collaboration among government, academia and the defense industry.
- Advising the defense research and advanced technology community about DoD’s plans, goals and problems.
- Reviewing challenges to defense technology.
- Exciting advanced technology professionals to generate new ideas for use in prospective research and technology programs.
- Encouraging R&D modernization programs.
- Reviewing major policy issues affecting defense R&D procurement and performance.
- Encouraging technology transfer between government, industry and academia.
- Stimulating innovation and entrepreneurship in solving defense problems.
- Stimulating the improvement of technical and research facilities to include laboratory design and applications.
- Engaging participants in an ongoing process to improve the effectiveness of DoD science and technology programs.
To accomplish its objectives, the division uses a variety of activities, including:
- An annual national conference that emphasizes interaction among DoD, industry and academia.
- Specialized topical symposia on identified critical technical issues.
- Division-developed workshops where experts from government, industry and academia may generate options for action on issues critical to the defense community.
- Presentation of follow-on reports and briefings to government, industry and academic officials.
- Participation in local activities in support of division goals, e.g., contact lecturing at local schools, gifts of supplies and related equipment.
- Sponsorship and support of appropriate academic, government and industrial programs designed to motivate U.S. students at every level to study science and engineering.
