ARLINGTON, VA -- Two senior staff members of National Defense Magazine, the official publication of the National Defense Industrial Association, were honored by the Washington, DC, chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists during its annual awards presentation on June 15.

Editor-in-Chief Stew Magnuson was a finalist in the “commentary in the trade publication” category for his column, "A Hard Look at the Land Mine Issue," from the October 2020 magazine. In the piece, Magnuson reflects on his personal journey with the controversial weapon and that of his friend Ken Rutherford. Magnuson joined the National Defense staff in 2005 and became editor in chief in 2017. He leads a team of award-winning journalists who report with an independent voice on the defense industry.

Creative Director Brian Taylor was a finalist in the “trade publication category” for covers he designed for the August, September and October 2020 issues. Taylor joined the National Defense staff in 2004 and has won numerous awards for his work in layout and design as well as covers.

Now in its 101st year of publication, National Defense Magazine has a circulation of 40,000 for the magazine and some 100,000 views online each month. The magazine also is available on newsstands at Barnes & Noble and Books-A-Million.

The Society of Professional Journalists is dedicated to the free practice of journalism and high standards of ethical behavior. Founded in 1909 and currently with about 6,000 members, its mission is to inspire and educate current and future journalists through professional development.
