NDIA commends work of National Security Commission on AI as it ends service
ARLINGTON, VA – The National Defense Industrial Association offers the following statement on the National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence, which will end service Oct. 1:
Since it began operating two years ago under congressional mandate, the National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence worked diligently and brought a great deal of value and guidance for future efforts in this area. NDIA and its Emerging Technologies Institute are grateful to the commission for its time and recommendations, as well as its partnership.
NDIA was honored to work with the commission on the National Security AI Conference and Exhibition in March, an event that gathered the defense industrial base to discuss artificial intelligence and machine learning. This was a rare opportunity for professionals in this field to be a part of the conversation on artificial intelligence, a dialogue that surely will affect the American warfighters’ competitive advantage.
NDIA is also considering recommendations from the commission’s final report in its Defense Workforce Project, which will explore policy recommendations to ensure a cutting-edge, future-focused American workforce. Its Emerging Technologies Institute also will focus on artificial intelligence issues in great detail as a follow-on to the final report.
The commission’s work “already has been incredibly impactful in shaping defense science and technology priorities, not just for artificial intelligence but also in related areas, such as defense microelectronics and workforce development,” ETI’s Executive Director Mark Lewis said.
The commission saw its recommendations become part of the Intelligence Authorization Act, the U.S. Innovation and Competition Act, other non-defense science and technology legislation, the fiscal year 2021 National Defense Authorization Act and in the draft of the fiscal year 2022 NDAA. NDIA and ETI congratulate the commission and thank it for service.
