Heather Hopkins
Head of Defense Policy, Amazon Web Services
Ms. Heather Hopkins has served in the national security field for over 20 years. In government, she has managed offices and led teams at the White House, the Departments of State and Defense, an embassy overseas and on Capitol Hill. In the private sector, she has worked in strategy and external affairs roles for large global companies such as BAE Systems, Inc. and Deloitte, as well as the privately held entrepreneurial company Sierra Nevada Corporation where she was Vice President for Government Relations.
Ms. Hopkins joined Amazon Web Services as the Head of Defense Policy in the fall of 2022. She advocates and strategizes for AWS's work with the Department of Defense with policy makers on Capitol Hill, senior decision makers at the Pentagon and partners with third party groups. AWS support's DOD's mission using, commercial cloud services and capabilities, at all classification levels and security domains, from the enterprise level to the tactical edge and utilizes cloud computing for data management, cyber, Al/ML and quantum computing.
Virginia's Governor Glenn Youngkin has appointed Hopkins to serve on the Capitol Square Preservation Council which oversees the planning of projects that affect the Virginia State Capitol and other historic buildings in Richmond. She is a fellow with the National Security Institute at the George Mason University Anton Scalia Law Center and was an original member of the Space Force Association, Washington, DC Chapter's board. She is also a volunteer with the USO and with her dog Rufus they provide comfort visits through a group called People Animals Love (PAL).
In her second Pentagon tour she served in three senior unique roles. She was Chief of Staff and Senior Advisor to the Secretary of the Army, as Special Assistant to the Deputy Secretary of Defense and she started and grew the new office for Intergovernmental Affairs for the Department of Defense.
Ms. Hopkins has served at the White House, for George W. Bush, on the National Security Council as a Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Legislative Affairs. In the early years of the Iraq War, Ms. Hopkins served two tours with the State Department as the Senior Adviser for Communications at U.S. Embassy Baghdad and ran protocol at the Coalition Provisional Authority managing all major VIP and Congressional visits all over the country. Prior to serving in the Executive Branch, Ms. Hopkins was on Capitol Hill with the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Newt Gingrich.
Ms. Hopkins is originally from Boston, MA and went to Southern Methodist University, in Dallas, TX. She has two Masters of Arts degrees from the University of Oklahoma, Norman.
She currently resides in Arlington, VA.
