Bio

Jim Briner graduated from California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo in 1989 with a BS in Aeronautical Engineering, and after a few years working, earned his MBA in Management Science in 1994 from Cal State University Hayward.

Mr. Briner has a varied career in both the private and government sectors. After two years of successful internships at Lockheed Space Systems, he spent five years with the US Navy’s Information Technology Center – bridging the gap between sponsor requirements and system owners for multiple enterprise-wide applications. Switching to the private sector in 1994, he spent two years as an IT Services Consultant, providing support to companies like PeopleSoft (now Oracle), Wells Fargo, and Cadence Technologies. In 1996, he assumed the Chief Operating Officer role (and subsequently the role of Chief Financial Officer) on a small four-person commodities training corporation where he played a key role in growing the company to over 50 people in eight years. In 2003, he negotiated the sale of the company to International Monetary Systems in Wisconsin, serving two more years as the West Coast Financial Operations Manager. In 2005, Mr. Briner went back to his roots and began working as Chief Resource Planner for the Coast Guard’s West Coast focused IT maintenance command. In 2009, he was part of the team that stood-up the Command, Control, Communications, Computers and Information Technology (C4IT) Service Center command, which in 2020 would expand by taking on Cyber and Intel to become the C5I Service Center (C5ISC). After two promotions, he now serves as the Asset Logistics Division Chief within C5ISC, leading a team of 90 budget, financial management, accounting, logistics, audit/compliance, software/hardware asset managers, and centralized software procurement professionals. Mr. Briner thrives in aligning limited government resources with strategic priorities and in using data to make calculated risk decisions.

Hailing originally from Hawaii, Mr. Briner currently lives in California just outside the Bay Area, has been married for 34 years, and has 2 children (30, 28). In addition to his BS and MBA degrees, he is a Certified Government Financial Manager and Certified Software Asset Manager.

Committed to physical fitness and nature-based activities, he has completed several Ironman triathlons, and over 50 ultra/marathons (including a 100K). Today, he loves multi-night hiking adventures around the world, and keeps it more simple – enjoying friends and family, using what he considers our most valuable asset ‘time’ to its fullest.
