Bio

Brigadier General (BG) Gail E. Atkins assumed command of Defense Logistics Agency (DLA), Land & Maritime on 22 July 2022. 

Preceding her assignment at DLA, BG Atkins served as the Deputy Commanding General for Support, 7th Infantry Division, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, WA from June 2021 through July 2022, Executive Officer for the Deputy Commanding General, Army Material Command from June 2020 through May 2021, and as the Commander of the Corpus Christi Army Depot (CCAD), Corpus Christi, TX from July 2018 through May 2020. 

Prior to assuming command of CCAD, she worked at the Joint Staff, J-8, Pentagon, serving as the Force Support Division Chief since June 2016. 

BG Atkins served at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, as a battalion commander of the 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade’s Aviation Support Battalion for 30 months. There, she wasresponsible for the training and mission readiness of over 700 Soldiers and deployed the unit to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Freedom Sentinel/Resolute Support. The support battalion was the only aviation logistics element in the theater of operations and assumed responsibilities for all rotary wing readiness and aviation equipment retrograde. 

Before assuming her role in Fort Bragg, BG Atkins served as a field grade aviation assignments officer at the US Army Human Resources Command at Fort Knox, Kentucky, where she was responsible for the mentorship, career counseling, assignment, and mission resourcing for over 850 aviation majors. 

Previous military assignments include the Commander of a helicopter detachment in Chièvres Air Base in Belgium, providing direct rotary wing support to the Supreme Allied Commander of Europe (SACEUR); Air Assault Battalion Operations Officer of a 30 aircraft assault battalion (Operation Iraqi Freedom), and as an airborne infantry brigade aviation operations officer (OIF). Her command experience also includes two company grade level commands in support of the US Army Special Operations Command and the 82nd Airborne Division, both located at Fort Bragg. 

BG Atkins holds a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Systems Engineering from the US Military Academy at West Point, a Master’s of Science in Logistics Management from the Florida Institute of Technology, and a Master’s of Science Degree in National Resource Strategy from the Eisenhower School of the National Defense University. 
Commander David C. Leiker (US Navy, Retired) and BG Atkins have four daughters.
