Bio
Colonel Toby Magsig was commissioned in the Infantry upon graduation from the United States Military Academy in 1996. He served as a Platoon Leader and Company Executive Officer in 2nd Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division (AASLT) at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, and in 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment in Savannah, Georgia.

After completion of the Maneuver Captains Career Course, COL Magsig served as the Aide-de-Camp for the Task Force Falcon Commanding General in Kosovo. He then commanded G Troop, 1st U.S. Cavalry Regiment (BRT) and HHC, 1st Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment in 2nd Brigade, 1st Armored Division, Baumholder, Germany. Subsequently, he served as the Battalion Adjutant, Assistant S3 and A Company Commander in 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment.

Following completion of Command and General Staff College, COL Magsig served as the liaison officer, S3 and XO in 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment. After three years in 3rd Ranger Battalion, COL Magsig moved up to the 75th Ranger Regiment HQ, where he served as the Senior LNO and Regimental S3. After leaving Fort Benning, COL Magsig commanded 1st Battalion, 501st Infantry (Airborne) at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, and commanded a Special Operations Advisory Group where he mentored and trained Afghan Special Operations Forces.

Following a year at the Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, COL Magsig served as the Division G3 for the 82nd Airborne Division before taking command of 1st BCT, 82nd Airborne Division from 2017-2019. Prior to assuming command of the Joint Modernization Command in June 2020, COL Magsig served as the Executive Officer to the Commanding General, U.S. Army Forces Command.
COL Magsig’s operational experience includes a deployment to Kosovo in support of Operation Joint Guard, three deployments to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and nine deployments to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

COL Magsig holds a Bachelor of Science from the United States Military Academy, a master’s in Organization Psychology from Columbia University, and a master’s in Strategic Studies from the Army War College. He is a graduate of the following military schools:  Airborne, Air Assault, Ranger, Pathfinder, Jumpmaster Course, IOBC, MCCC, CAS3, and CGSC.

COL Magsig’s awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Army Commendation Medal with “V” device, the Army Achievement Medal, the Expert Infantryman’s Badge, Combat Infantryman’s Badge, Master Parachutist Badge, Ranger Tab, and the Australian, German, Chilean and French Jump Wings.
