Introduction to a Rapidly Changing (and Flying) World of Hypersonics

This tutorial will provide a brief historical perspective of hypersonic flight. The tutorial will then discuss the fluid flow features that categorize a flow as hypersonic, the effects of high temperature flow and implications to materials and structures, and modeling and simulation tools used to design hypersonic vehicles. We conclude with a discussion on the implications on offensive and defensive weapons. This course is for anyone who wants to understand the unique challenges of hypersonic flight and discuss current challenges and limitations on testing, manufacturing, modeling & simulation and materials suppliers. The material come from numerous sources including material compiled for the Compressible and Hypersonic Flow course taught at the USAF Test Pilot School.
