We present the experimental characterization methods and results for dynamic evaluation of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) shock accelerometers for high-g applications. In this work, we assembled older as well as recent laboratory dynamic shock testing of damped MEMS piezoresistive shock accelerometers from various manufacturers (Endevco, PCB, Kulite, TE Connectivity). The dynamic shock testing was performed using a Hopkinson bar to characterize the forward and reverse linearity, cross-axis sensitivity, and performance over a range of acceleration levels for each accelerometer.

In March 2014, three Australian soldiers were injured as a result of an incident where an artillery fuze initiated on being rammed in an M777A2 Howitzer. This presentation will explore the incident itself, as well as the investigation and overarching inquiry, and their findings, along with the outcomes of the incident and Australian lessons learned.
