Lieutenant Commander Gregory M. Contreras joined the Navy out of his hometown of Pleasant Hill, California, a suburb of the San Francisco Bay Area. After accepting an Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps scholarship to the University of Idaho, Contreras completed a Bachelors of Naval Science and Mechanical Engineering. He was designated for Nuclear Accession Training and commissioned in May 2007. Contreras completed school at Naval Nuclear Power Training Command in Charleston, SC and attended Prototype at Nuclear Power Training Unit in Ballston Spa, NY until accepting lateral transfer as Surface Warfare Office with Engineering Duty Option.

He reported to USS CHAFEE in September 2009 serving as the OI Division officer and Assistant Operations Officer. Contreras qualified Surface Warfare Officer in February 2011 and assumed duties as Operations Officer (N3) for Task Group 73 for CARAT and bilateral exercises. Contreras detached from his afloat activities and worked as assistant to Code 400 director at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard assisting in memorandums with contractors and union leaders. From 2011-2013, he attended Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA where he completed a Master’s of Science in Astronautical Engineering and Joint Professional Military Education, Phase I.

Upon graduation, Contreras accepted a position as a subsystem engineer and Contracting Officer’s Technical Representative (COTR) for technical maturation in a Major Space Systems Program at the National Reconnaissance Office. During this tour of duty, he qualified as Information Warfare Officer, Space Cadre Acquisition Level 1, Engineering Duty Officer, Program Manager Level 2, COTR Level 2, and launch operator. Contreras completed a one-year tour as the Engineering, Technical, and Logistics Advisor for Naval Forces Division to the Royal Saudi Navy in Jubail, Saudi Arabia. During this period, Contreras completed a Master’s in Engineering Administration from Virginia Tech. Arriving in August of 2017 at Naval Information Warfare Center in Charleston, South Carolina, Contreras supported the Afloat Signals Exploitation IPT and he is currently serving as Program Manager for DI2E Framework.

His awards include the Defense Meritorious Medal, Joint Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and Letters of Commendation from U.S. Army and U.S. Navy.
