Fundamentals of Capability Systems Design
Why do many large acquisition programs struggle? Whilst there are many reasons, the root causes often develop early and are directly attributable to poor user needs definition, missing system requirements and ill-defined interfaces. Such critical gaps and omissions can be easily observed in poorly developed Joint Capability Needs Statements (JCNS), Operational Concept Documents (OCD) or User Requirement Documents (URD). Once this occurs, it’s almost impossible to develop a coherent, complete and achievable Performance Specifications that will deliver a capability system meeting the user’s need.
This 8-hour self-paced, on-demand course provides students with essential knowledge and skills needed to confidently develop coherent and achievable JCNS, OCD and Performance Specifications (PSPEC). Participants learn a proven method how to accurately capture user needs through structured mission and operational analysis, then translate those needs into well-written, traceable systems requirements via functional analysis methods. Designed for requirement developers, systems engineers, project managers, and ILS professionals, this course delivers practical, actionable knowledge to address the challenges of capability system design in defense acquisition.
Students receive an e-copy of the course folder containing course presentation slides, and access to curated course readings—ensuring they have the resources needed to reinforce learning, reference key concepts, and apply best practices long after completing the course.
Student testimonial: “This course provided me with an excellent insight into the capability systems design process. Its structure and delivery set a benchmark for other online courses. Well done EIT.” |
