ARLINGTON, VA – Scott O’Neil, previously NAVAIR executive director for research and engineering, will receive the 2017 Precision Strike Association’s Richard H. Johnson Technical Achievement Award during the organization’s symposium Wed., Oct. 25, in Laurel, MD.

“We are honored to recognize Mr. O’Neil for his many contributions to our nation across his storied precision weapons career – ensuring warfighters always have the right precision munitions for the fight,” said Ken Masson, chairman of the Precision Strike Association, an affiliate of the National Defense Industrial Association.

O’Neil had worked as a civilian with the Navy for 43 years before he retired in January 2016. For 10 years before his retirement, O’Neil was executive director and director for research and engineering of the Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division at China Lake, CA. He currently is executive director of the Indian Wells Valley Economic Development Corp., and the China Lake Alliance. He is proprietor of S.M. O’Neil Consulting LLC, and a member of the Naval Research Advisory Committee, an independent, civilian, scientific advisory group that gives senior Navy leadership objective analyses in science, research, and development.

Masson credited O’Neil’s work as having a strong and enduring impact on the precision strike community, “providing a solid continuity of focus and unwavering support for our nation’s warfighters. Scott exemplifies the spirit and contributions of Dick Johnson.”

The award is named in honor of Johnson, a record-breaking pilot and an engineer responsible for much innovation in the field. The award recognizes an individual’s technical achievement that has resulted in a significant contribution to precision strike systems.

The Precision Strike Technology Symposium takes place Oct. 24-26. This is a classified event that includes discussions by key leaders, decision makers, warfighters, acquisition executives, and technical experts on technologies and programs to meet the global challenges facing the nation.
