ARLINGTON, VA – National Defense magazine, the official publication of the National Defense Industrial Association, won three Defence Media Awards, presented at a ceremony at the National Press Club in Washington Oct. 10.

Taking home honors for the Arlington, Virginia-based monthly periodical are:

  • Managing Editor Jon Harper, who won the Best Land Systems coverage award for his May cover story on Special Operations in the Arctic. Harper also was nominated for the John Morrocco Award for Best In-Depth Defense Reporting and in the Best Military Maintenance Repair and Overhaul category.

  • Senior Editor Yasmin Tadjdeh, who won Best Training, Simulation and Readiness story for her December 2020 coverage on using simulators to solve pilot shortages. Tadjdeh also was nominated in the categories of Best Young Defence Journalist, Best Defence Electronics coverage and Best Military Rotorcraft coverage.

  • Creative Director Brian Taylor, who won for Best Digital Defence submission for innovative use of augmented reality in the print magazine. The NDIA AR app gives readers access to computer-generated content for certain stories. With the technology, photos come to life, videos appear and other enhancements go live.

Worthy of note, the magazine’s former Editor in Chief Sandra Erwin won the best national security space story and was given Outstanding Achievement Award for her career accomplishments. The citation read: “As the long-time editor of National Defense magazine, (Erwin) brought a no-nonsense approach that elevated an association house publication beyond what most readers would expect.”

National Defense magazine garnered the most awards of any nominated publication for these annual honors, said Editor in Chief Stew Magnuson. The magazine had nine nominations for these awards, which began in 2018 to recognize the work of defense journalists and publishers.
