Bio

Joanna T. Lau, Director, Trustee, CEO, and Entrepreneur with broad strategic, operation and technology experiences in corporate, private and public boards. She is the founder and CEO of Lau Technologies, a technology development company, now a provider of debt and equity financing and consulting services to various industries.

Board Experience

Joanna currently serves as a member of two public boards.  She is a Director of DSW, a leading multi-channel retailer of branded footwear and accessories. She chairs DSW’s technology committee and is a member of its audit committee.

Joanna also serves on various non-profit boards. She is a member of the Board of Directors of Nellie Mae Education Foundation, New England’s largest philanthropic organization dedicated exclusively to education, a member of the Board of Directors of the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation, and a member of the Board of the National Defense Industrial Association.

 Joanna previous public board experiences included InfoSoft, FSI International, Boston Federal Bank, TD Bank and ITT Educational Services.

Professional achievement

Joanna was named the Ernest & Young National Entrepreneur of the Year.  She is the recipient of the Massachusetts High Tech All Star Award and the New England Women Leadership Award.

Lau Technologies was named the Army Contractor Excellence Award for the work on Desert Storm, the Nunn-Perry Award for Mentor Protégé program, and the R.J. Collier Trophy for the Global Hawk Program.  Boston Business Journal named the Company one of the Top 100 Private Companies.

Business Experience

For over a decade, Lau Technologies’ Defense division delivered state of the art products to the US Army and Air Force, the division was sold to Curtiss-Wright Corporation, a NYSE company.

Lau Technologies was the first in the World to introduce facial recognition technology into driver's license, secure document, access control and surveillance. The division went public as Viisage Technology Inc., and later merged into L1 Identity and Security Systems, now a division of BAE of the UK.

Other Affiliations:

Joanna serves as a member of the Marshall Scholarship Committee since 2003 and was appointed by the United Kingdom as Chair of the New England Committee in 2010.

Joanna is a member of the Young/World President Organization (YPO/WPO) and served as chapter chair in 2012. 

Joanna has been recognized as the recipient of the Ernest & Young National Turn Around Entrepreneur of the Year Award, the Mass High Tech All Star Award, and the New England Women Leadership Award.

Joanna received an MBA from Boston University, a MS in Computer Science from Old Dominion University and a BS in Computer Science and Applied Mathematics from SUNY at Stony Brook. She has also received numerous Honorary Doctorate Degrees in Commercial Sciences from Bryant, Bentley and Suffolk Universities.
