Patrick Shanahan Patrick Shanahan

ARLINGTON, VA -- The National Defense Industrial Association issues this statement on the pending nomination of Patrick Shanahan as defense secretary:

NDIA commends the pending nomination of Patrick Shanahan as the new secretary of defense. We recommend his expeditious confirmation by the Senate and the nomination and confirmation of the key Pentagon billets still filled by officials operating in an acting capacity.

Shanahan brings with him experience as deputy secretary of defense along with his lengthy tenure as an industry leader and visionary.  He is uniquely positioned to provide strategic continuity at the department as it implements the National Defense Strategy he helped shepherd with former Defense Secretary Mattis.  That strategy, and its focus on great power competition, includes the drive to continue to be at the forefront of technology and advanced capabilities.  Only America’s defense industrial base and the innovative people and companies that participate in it can maintain and extend the capability advantages we enjoy over our competitors.  Shanahan’s understanding of that base will be vital to ensure a partnership with all of industry that will serve our warfighters today and in the future.

NDIA encourages the Senate to move quickly to ensure that the Pentagon can benefit from Shanahan’s leadership, while enabling him to focus on filling the other acting positions and lead the department into the future.
