ACE Mentor Program and Scholarship
The national ACE Mentor program unites professionals with students interested in pursuing careers in architecture, construction, and engineering. Design teams are created with mentors guiding Junior and Senior high school students through an actual design project. Held throughout the school year in after school sessions, teams present their final designs at year end with winners presenting their designs to civic and professional organizations. Bechtel Construction Operations, Inc. in Frederick, Maryland is in its fifth year sponsoring a local ACE program. "We look at applicants from prep, public, and home school backgrounds, but we don’t look only at grades" said Carol Ritz, Bechtel’s ACE program coordinator. "We often accept students with a 3.0 GPA who are not quite sure where to go, but are determined to be successful."

Bechtel accepts 45 students annually and offers scholarships and job placement assistance for ACE program graduates.

Disney’s Youth Education Series
"Discover the Magic of Learning" is the motto for Disney’s Youth Education Series (Y.E.S.) where fifth through 8th grade students visit Disney theme parks to see how classroom principles apply to real life applications.  Barbara Blake, Program Manager at Walt Disney World, works with teachers and special interest groups to design 3-hour, in park experiences that test the theories of many disciplines, including STEM.

"Disney as a company recognizes the importance of STEM in the design and functionality of our parks and resorts," said Christine DeMichael, Y.E.S. Marketing Manager, "as well as in animation, show production, and in our education and research partnership with NASA."

Walt Disney World currently offers nineteen programs, including animation, science, physics, sound effects, technical theater design, stage effects, lighting, and grid design.

HORIZONS Scholarship Program, Women in Defense

HORIZONS Scholarship Program, Women in Defense
Women in Defense (WID) created the HORIZONS scholarship fund in 1988 to "help foster women’s growth in national security". "What makes our scholarship unique is that it allows women to study a multitude of disciplines that benefit national security in unique ways," said Jane Patrick Casey, past WID Staff Director.

Brenda McKinney, Immediate Past Director of the HORIZONS Scholarship Fund, said that this year’s recipients included a mechanical engineering student working on robotics projects for the military, a Public Policy and Management student working with the Secret Service, and a J.D. candidate working on Homeland Security initiatives. "I am amazed at what these young women have accomplished!" she said.
Additionally, many of WID’s local chapters also offer scholarships and mentoring programs.
