U.S.-South Africa Defense Industry Cooperation Symposium

Bilateral U.S.-South Africa Defense Industry Cooperation Symposium

September 20, 2010

The Embassy of the United States of America in South Africa organized a U.S.-South Africa Defense Industry Cooperation Symposium held at the Spier Wine Estate in Cape Town, South Africa on September 20, 2010.  This by invitation only one-day symposium will be held immediately prior to the start of the Africa Aerospace and Defense (AAD) Exhibition to be held at Ysterplaat Airforce Base (also near Capetown).  For more information about the symposium, please visit

The overall objective of this one day event was to initiate business-to-business discussions on how the private sector might be able to contribute to bilateral defense cooperation.  Attendees will explore opportunities for American companies to sell to the South African military and will discuss U.S.-South African collaboration in peacekeeping projects across Africa.   They will also focus on South African exports to the United States military.  This is the first event of its type that has ever been held in Africa.  It is hoped this symposium will be the first of a long series of biannual events highlighting the potential for U.S.-South African defense industry cooperation.

Among the topics being covered at this event are: the African Battlespace, an overview by both U.S. Department of Defense and South African National Defense Forces, U.S. and South African acquisition, and capacity build and facilities.

This bilateral conference is organized with the support of the U.S. Department of Defense and the South African National Defense Forces.   The Aerospace Maritime and Defense Association of South Africa (AMD) and ARMSCOR, the South Africa government-owned corporation that serves as the purchasing arm of the South African military, are sponsors and co-organizers in conjunction with the Commercial Section of the U.S. Embassy in South Africa.  The first NDIA member companies to have come forward offering sponsorship of this event are The Boeing Company and Raytheon Company

The Commercial Section of the U.S. Embassy in South Africa, as the primary organizer of the program, is soliciting corporate sponsorships to help to fund this event.  Sponsorships will not be limited to American and South African companies.  For sponsoring companies  there will be numerous branding formats, and every effort will be made to make available opportunities to present to the group, perhaps giving key note speeches or leading panels on a first come, first serve basis.  Also, we would welcome sponsors to provide individuals names and contact information in South Africa that should specifically be invited to the event.
